The Professional Standards for BC Educators are set in place to progress the work of teachers. The Standards convey the responsibilities of teachers in regard to their duty as a professional and the demanding nature of their work. Part nine of the Standards also reflects that educators are making an initiative to contribute to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission such that they will promote healing and acknowledgment of the history and contributions of First Nations, Metis and Inuit in Canada. Educators have a role of advocacy when it comes to their students’ needs and making a space of inclusivity and safety within their classroom environments. The Standards outline expectations of educators in which they have the freedom to act and be accountable for their public actions.
